Two Perfect Weekend Breakfasts

Eggs I

Breakfast is by far my favorite meal. What a delight to experience two unexpectedly perfect breakfasts during our weekend stay in Sullivan County.

SATURDAY: Crispy Eggs with Cheesy Jalapeno Grits at The Heron, Narrowsburg, NY

Narrowsburg is a sleepy little town with a main street that now boasts a well curated clothing and housewares shop called Nest, a good cafe, and now The Heron, serving American fare, farm to table.

At The Heron my family ordered a table full of eggs and pancakes, all delicious. I had the Crispy Eggs with Cheesy Jalapeno Grits, a truly fantastic dish! In lieu of toast the eggs are fried over-easy on a breadcrumb base. This creates a crispy crust for the eggs which are then served on a cushion of exceedingly creamy and flavorful cheese grits. Delicious, textural, rich and filling.

I am sure that The Heron is destined to become my favorite restaurant in Sullivan County. We may not be back for a few weeks, so I was happy to find The Heron owners Marla Puccetti and Paul Nanni shared the recipe for Crispy Eggs with Cheesy Jalapeno Grits online at Good Day NY. There is a video so you can watch them make the dish as well.

SUNDAY:  Pancake Breakfast at Saint Mary’s Parish, Obernburg, NY

On Sunday we drove to the quaint village of Obernburg. The drive along a twisting road through farms and woods was lovely. At Saint Mary’s, Sullivan County’s oldest Catholic parish, we were graciously served huge stacks of hot cakes with eggs and sausages all perfectly prepared, plentiful and delicious. It was pleasant to sit among generations of Sullivan County residents as well as other summer visitors like ourselves, all enjoying a tasty and satisfying start to the day.
